Bring Your Life Insurance Home from Work
Only 44% of American households have individual life insurance — a 50-year low.1 Perhaps this is because life insurance is a fairly common employee benefit. However, relying on a group policy through your employer means that the coverage could end if your job situation changes.
An important reason to own…

You’ve got a car and you wouldn’t think about not insuring it, right? Same goes for your home because who has enough money sitting in their bank account to buy a new car or home if either were to crash or burn? So your car and your home are insured, but chances are you aren’t properly protecting something that is many times more valuable than either of…

Most disaster recovery plans that fail do so from a lack of backups, lack of network documentation or lack of practice. A documented plan with recent backups and a practiced staff will work better than a grandiose scheme only an engineer can understand.
- No matter how good your disaster recovery plan, you cannot recover data that is not backed up.…

Recovery from a server failure could take several days to a week - Traditional disaster recovery solutions are often costly and complex—and can’t meet your recovery objectives
Tape is a great backup medium but a lousy restore medium - 50% of tapes fail to restore. Backups go in but they don’t come out
Online backup is an unbelievably slow recovery medium - The real problem with online backup is recovery. It…

We’ve all experienced it. That PC you know should be zipping along but isn’t. You add more memory, but it’s still barely chugging. Fortunately, it’s fairly easy to troubleshoot those ailing machines. Here are five steps you can take to help your machines run much faster.
1: Defragment
This one should go without saying. However, I am always surprised at how few people regularly do this — or how many IT admins neglect to set up machines to do this…

In 2011, the Estate Tax is due to return with a 1 million dollar exemption (unified credit) and top tax rate of 55%. Without planning, this exemption is the same for both individuals and married couples. The following illustration explains how.
Married couples have an unlimited marital deduction to pass assets between each other1. Although useful during their lifetime, if their joint estate exceeds the unified credit, this…

The state of Florida is holding a 2009 Matchmaker Conference and Trade Show Nov 18th - 20th in Orlando. The goal is to match up minority, women and disabled veteran-owned small businesses with Florida state purchasing departments and large business partners. This looks like a real opportunity for qualifying businesses. They have a fairly hefty certification process but I'm going to try to get certified before the conference.
If you're interested, look at…

Florida only recognizes two ways of naming a guardian for a minor, either in your will or with a designation of preneed guardian. Without one of these documents the courts have no guidance in who you wanted as guardian for your children.

Early in my career, I worked on a probate where a lady had prepared her own will, and left her entire estate to the National Wildlife Foundation. Unfortunately, she meant to leave it to the National Wildlife Federation. Because a few clever people had set up companies around the states under this name, it took several months and thousands of dollars to get her money to the charity she intended.
There's nothing wrong with preparing your own will, as long as you're confident that you…

Real property is probated in the state in which it resides. Therefore, anyone that owns real estate in any state other than the one they live in is looking at multiple probates. This can easily be avoided by placing out of state property in a trust.

Florida law does not recognize common law marriage and makes no provision for significant others. Therefore, if a non-marital couple wish to protect each other, they must provide for each other in a Will or Trust.
