I know it can be discouraging trying to keep up with all the changes that Google puts in place as you try to reach that elusive top spot on the search engine. You think you finally have things figured out and then the goal posts move again.
Today I have three insider tips for you that may help move you to the top and they are not highly technical. In fact, they can be accomplished with content.
The first tip is one that you may say to yourself, “I should have thought of that”. If you go to Google and do a search for the keyword phrase you want to rank for you will get 10 organic results that Google sees as the most relevant. These sites can be a blueprint for you to match and even improve upon for your site.
Just review these sites, take notes on the content you see on each of them and then make sure you add similar content to your site. I have a client in the commercial real estate sector that we are doing that for now. They already rank number 4 for their keyword phrase but that means there are 3 sites ahead of them that can provide hints into what Google is looking for.
Tip number 2 comes from what we have been learning over the past few years from studies on word count for the top results on Google. What we have been seeing is that in going from spot number 10 up to spot number 1 the average word count ranges from 1600 words up to 2000 words for the top spots.
Because of this we are taking it a step further with what we call “Epic Content”. We select an evergreen topic, thoroughly research the topic and keywords associated with it and create a 6000+ word article on that topic. We’re doing this for a local moving company and will be able to have them top rankings for many of their best keywords.
The last tip is probably the most challenging one for a do-it-yourselfer. You have to promote your site and it’s content with backlinks. Backlinks are links on other websites that point to your website.
Some of the best types of backlinks are those that are earned editorially in articles posted on other websites. This can occur naturally when you produce amazing content and other people know about it and reference it in articles they write.
But most of us have to work at by finding relevant blog sites and pitching them on article ideas we can create for their readers. Then if the idea is accepted, write the article and add a link within the article that goes back to a relevant page on your site.
Do these 3 steps well and you will be amazed at what happens to your rankings on Google.
